Amalfi Coast is one of the best Italian holidays destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies on the southern side of the Sorrentine peninsula, south of Naples. Towering cliffs dotted with colorful villages plunge into the sea and a panoramic narrow road that runs along the coast offers stunning views. Stay in the town of Sorrento or in a village on the coast and visit Capri, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. There are fast ferries or buses which run during the day among the villages.
Worth to visit The pretty village of Amalfi, once a powerful maritime republic has a splendid cathedral and a lively center. High above Amalfi, a twisting road leads through the Dragon Valley and the Valley of the Queen to romantic Ravello, which has two beautiful villas and offers truly amazing views along the coast. Ravello is known as the 'city of music' and in summer there are outdoor panoramic concerts in the gardens of the Villa Rufolo. West of Amalfi, Positano tumbles down the cliffs and draws a celebrity crowd. It's famous for its designer shops but you can get away from it all by taking a stroll in the Lattari Mountains, hiking on the Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods, that runs between Positano and the lovely resort of Praiano. Then take the coast road to the ancient village of Nerano, an authentic village among the olive groves and the sea with stunning views to the Galli Islands. Take the path which goes up to the hill and then down to the Natural Park Baia di Ieranto, one of the best places to swim with turquoise water and a canoe center which, in summer, organizes tours to explore the coast by the sea.
Food and Wine The traditional restaurants of the Amalfi Coast are the right places where to taste the best Mediterranean cuisine, so delicious because made with the top quality local ingredients that do not taste the same elsewhere! The real buffalo mozzarella is produced in the nearby village of Battipaglia. The most naturally sugary cherry tomatoes come from Mount Vesuvius. The pasta trafilata al bronzo comes from the hilltop village of Gragnano, the birthplace of dry pasta. The biggest lemons you have ever seen and which are used to make the popular Limocello are from Sorrento. In addition, there is a local fishing fleet that guarantees fresh seasonal fish and seafood every day! So, it is not a surprise that you will eat great food here from the simple fried small pizzettas and panzerotti to the delicious spaghetti a vongole, with clams or a succulent pesce alle brace, grilled fish. To try all these specialties is really a must! Taste also the excellent local wine Fiano di Avellino, Falanghina, Lacrima Cristi.
