Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, bursting with monuments, works of art and the best of the Italian Renaissance. The city was home to De Medici family and also to Michelangelo and Galileo. From 1865 until 1870 Florence was also the capital of Italy before its unification.
Worth to visit Top of your agenda should be a visit to the Duomo and Giotto's bell tower, to see the city from above. Admire the door of the baptistery and then visit the Uffizi Gallery, full to the brim with Renaissance treasures. It's here where you can admire most of the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Botticelli. After that, it's on to the Pitti Palace and to see Michelangelo's David in the Accademia Gallery. Piazza della Signoria with the Loggia dei Lanzi is an open-air museum not to be missed. Cross Ponte Vecchio, that was the only bridge in the city to survive the Second World War. Take a romantic stroll to Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoy the breath-taking view across the city. To unwind take a stroll in the Boboli Gardens. To have the priority access to museums, without having to queue, you will need to buy the "Firenze Card" which will give you also free travel on public transport.
Food and wine Florence has a lot of traditional 'trattorie' where you must try the local specialties: 'ribollita' a vegetables soup, 'Fiorentina' (the local T-bone steak), 'Fagioli all'uccelletto' (beans with sauce), egg-tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. Wash it down with a glass of red Chianti. But don't forget to leave room for a dessert! Try 'Cantucci con Vin Santo' (almond biscuits accompanied by a small glass of sweet wine).
