Milan is a business city and the fashion and designer center of Italy which has also amazing artistic treasures.
Worth to visit - the Castello Sforzesco and the striking Gothic Duomo are the two most important monuments which deserve a visit. The Duomo is one of the world's great cathedrals and you can take a walk on its roof to admire the magnificent view of the city below. In the same square 'Piazza del Duomo' you find the 'Galleria Vittorio Emanuele' which is a marvelous 19th-century arcade. Nearby lies also the world-famous theatre 'La Scala'. The area to the north of the Duomo is Milan's famous 'Fashion Triangle' and here the major fashion designers have their shops. Milan is also home to Leonardo da Vinci's famous fresco, The Last Supper, which is housed in Santa Maria delle Grazie. In the 20th century, Futurism was Milan's great contribution to the world and some of the works of the movement's most famous painters are on show in the Museo del Novecento. There is more magnificent art at the Pinacoteca di Brera.
Food and wine Specialty food shops abound and bakeries all over the city sell panettone, the dome-shaped Christmas cake that was invented in Milan. Milanese cuisine is highly distinctive. Order ossobuco, a veal stew, or cotoletta alla Milanese or risotto alla Milanese, made with saffron and beef marrow. This is also the home of the aperitif and Milan has a lively café culture. An evening drink is served with a wide array of snacks so that you can even skip dinner before heading to one of the city's many clubs.
