THE HOTEL: This hilltop boutique B&B All'Ombra del Pero in southern Piedmont has wonderful views of the countryside. It is close to Langa del Moscato, Barbaresco, Monte Viso, and Monterosa. The pretty garden has an ancient pear tree, hence its name, and a panoramic swimming pool. You can pick fruit from the fruit trees and relax in the cooling breeze.
THE OWNER: Susanne, is originally from Germany and moved to Milan 32 years ago, where she met her husband, Bruno. After 15 years in the big city, they wanted a quieter life and moved to the country.
20 years ago they purchased this tumbledown 19th-century farmhouse and after careful restoration turned into this beautiful B&B. They love their life in the Langhe and will do everything to help you fall under its spell too.
THE ROOMS: There are just five rooms, with en-suite bathrooms and beamed ceilings. One room has a private terrace. Some of them have direct access to the garden and are named after the trees that grow in this lush environment – the fig, the apricot, and the cherry tree. The decoration reflects their chosen fruit.
THE FOOD: Breakfast on a sumptuous buffet of fresh bread, croissants, yogurt, jams, and tasty Piedmontese cheese. Evening meals are also available on request. Susanne and Bruno organize special sessions where you can savor local products and the Langhe's delicious wines.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Play board games or relax in front of the piano in the two lounges. There is a well-stocked library with books in many languages including the works of Piedmont's Beppe Fenoglio, Cesare Pavese, and Davide Lajolo.
LOCATION: All'Ombra del Pero is in the Langhe, in southern Piedmont close to the gourmet city of Alba. It is an hour to Turin and the Ligurian coast.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: The Langhe is foodie heaven. Visit its vineyards and try its famous three-lobbed hazelnuts. Susanne and Bruno can tell you how to cook or can take you to meet some of the young entrepreneurs who are reviving local food products and inventing new ways to use the riches of the land.
Alba is the truffle capital of Italy and has some top-class restaurants. The air is scented with chocolate, as this is the home of Nutella! Be sure to enjoy the many festivals that go on all year round in the area.
