THE HOTEL: Boutique Hotel Castello di Monticelli is a relais with beautiful rooms and holiday apartments in Umbria. The inn is located into a 12th-century hamlet and has an in-house restaurant, popular also among locals; two landscaped pools, and a beautiful terrace overlooking the wonderful views across the Umbrian countryside.
THE OWNER: The hotel is owned by Ellen and Giuseppe. Ellen is German and came to Umbria .... years ago. Giuseppe is her husband's brother, professor, and passionate about hospitality. The family bought the hamlet in the 1990s and restored it over the last 12 years to its original state and under the supervision of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage who listed the property for its historic value.
They opened the Castello di Monticelli in 2012 to welcome people willing to share their authentic passion for this beautiful land.
THE ROOMS: There are 22 rooms and large and modern equipped holiday apartments that can sleep up to 5 people. They are tastefully furnished with terracotta flooring and wooden beams ceilings. All the accommodations have their own private patio, wifi and are air-conditioned.
THE FOOD: Generous and delicious organic breakfast is served in the garden or in the gothic breakfast room. There is an excellent in-house restaurant which serves typical Umbrian and Italian dishes in the medieval lounge. In summer guests can dine romantically under the pergola with stunning views over Perugia. Gluten-free and vegetarian dishes are available.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Ask Giuseppe for a tour around the estate, in the grotto, and to the frescoed ancient chapel. Castello di Monticelli is full of history! Its 4 towers date back to the 12th century and it hosted the Benedectine monks who owned and farmed the land.
LOCATION: Castello di Monticelli sits among the beautiful Umbrian countryside, surrounded by vineyards and offers breathtaking views. Perugia Airport is only 30 minutes away.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: This is a great base from which to explore Umbria and Tuscany but you must have a car. You are at less than 1-hour drive to Perugia, Lake Trasimeno, and the picturesque hilltop villages Assisi, Gubbio, Cortona, Todi, and Orvieto. Siena, Florence, and Rome are within a drive of 2 hours. Besides walking in the forest, horse riding, and cycling around Lake Trasimeno, you can relax at the pool, join a cookery class, or visit local farms. There are four wine and olive oil producers within 3 km and also a cheese-factory. Go for the black truffle hunting in Autumn and rafting at Marmore waterfalls in Summer.
GOOD TO KNOW: There is a bar, few restaurants, and a supermarket 10 mins away.
