THE HOTEL: Boutique Il Tosco is a luxury guesthouse with bed and breakfast in the magical Renaissance Montepulciano in the South of Tuscany. The apartment is in an elegant palazzo, with views across the olive groves and vineyards below.
THE OWNER: Friendly Elena studied in Milan before she decided to go into the hotel business. With her parents' assistance, she restored this stylish flat in an old Palazzo and started to receive guests, just a few years ago.
THE ROOMS: Elena has 4 rooms in all, each of which is named after some of the region's best-known sons: Poliziano, Puccini, Verdi and the poet Dante. In Dante, guests can relax in the jacuzzi. The room also has a paneled ceiling. The contemporary Poliziano has a leather bed but its style is a clever mix of old and new, as the rooms have the original beams.
Each room is air-conditioned, has free Wi-fi and a satellite LCD TV, a mini-bar, and a docking station. The travertine bathrooms are equipped with either a bath or a hydro-massage shower, the bespoke sinks are locally crafted.
The two living rooms have a fireplace and a piano. They connect with the bedrooms and can be converted into two large suites. Alternatively, guests can rent the entire bed and breakfast.
THE FOOD: Breakfast is a sumptuous array of sweet pastries, homemade cakes, salmon, cured meats, and yogurt. There are also grilled vegetables, local cheeses, eggs, and a variety of bread so you try some of the local best products.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: The gorgeous breakfast room has a frescoed ceiling, while the wooden floors and traditional decor add authenticity, as do the fascinating antique books.
LOCATION: Montepulciano is perfectly located if you want to discover the charms of Tuscany. Take a trip to Siena and a peaceful drive in the beautiful hills of the Val d'Orcia. Take a boat tour on nearby Lake Trasimeno. Visit Assisi, Gubbio, and Orvieto which are just under an hour by car.
Chiusi-Chianciano railway station is at 15mins. Florence Airport at 1.20hrs. The Airports of Pisa and Rome are at 2hrs.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Visit the Salcheto cellar at a ten minutes' drive. Dine in the excellent local restaurants. Shop for exciting souvenirs in Montepulciano's lovely little shops. Elena can organize discounts for her clients. You can even go back to school and improve your Italian at the language center, Il Sasso.
