THE HOTEL: There is a touch of Shoreditch in Tuscany these days since former record producer and entrepreneur John Voigtmann opened the sister to his highly successful La Bandita Farmhouse. La Bandita Townhouse is a youthful, hip hotel and brings a Milan urban chic to beautiful Renaissance Pienza, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Housed in a former convent the hotel has been sympathetically restored.
THE OWNER: John Voigtmann is a former record company executive who used to manage some of the world's top rock stars. In 2001 he and his travel writer wife decided that there was a clever business opportunity to be had opening an exclusive hotel in Tuscany that would take them away from the fast pace of life in New York. La Bandita Farmhouse now has a chic sister hotel and the Bandita brand is going from strength to strength. As John says, "This is a place to observe tourists, rather than be one, to see them swell in and then out each day, while from the window of your room, you gaze down the medieval alleys, catch the distant sound of an Italian song playing and smell the pasta sauce being readied for lunch."
THE ROOMS: The convent's cells have been magically turned into twelve beautiful stylish suites that fuse the old with new in a minimalist fashion. From your room, you can gaze down onto the cobbled streets below or across the hills of the Val d'Orcia towards Monte Amiata. The design is simple with good queen-size beds. There are all mod cons including free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, minibar, and flat-screen LCD TVs and free Wi-Fi. Ortigia toiletries, Busatti linen, and Riccardo Barthel distressed leather armchairs set the atmosphere.
THE FOOD: The hotel has a popular restaurant in the hands of Glaswegian chef David Margan. The medieval courtyard is the perfect setting in which to taste his culinary creations.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: There are an honesty bar and library.
LOCATION: Pienza is 90 minutes from Florence and the nearest train station is at Chiusi-Chianciano, which is 45 minutes away.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Pienza is a beautiful hilltop town in the heart of Italy. It makes a great base from which to explore the Val d'Orcia and its wonderful vineyards. The wonderful Renaissance towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano are close by.
GOOD TO KNOW: The hotel has bikes that are free for guests to use and there are toys for children.
