THE HOTEL: Fall for the magic of the Amalfi coast at the Hotel Margherita, which sits perched high on the clifftop clustered around an Aragonese watchtower. There is an enchanting view from its beautiful terrace and the coast and the sparkling blue sea stretches below. There is a panoramic hydro-massage swimming pool with Jacuzzi. The hotel is surrounded by lush green hills.
THE OWNER: This is a family-run establishment with a romantic story behind it. Forty years ago, Margherita, who was the daughter of the village doctor, gave her heart to young Giuseppe from Praiano. They married and left for the USA but their hometown called them home. They decided to go back and turn the old family house into a boutique hotel. The couple has now retired and their daughter, Suela, and her partner Andrea, who have four children, now manage the hotel.
THE ROOMS: There are 28 rooms. Each one is soundproofed and furnished in a traditional manner and has Amalfi hand-painted majolica tiles. Every room has a private terrace, Sky TV, air conditioning, and a minibar. The rooms are of different types: classic doubles overlooking the lemon groves; superior rooms sleeping three, which have sea views and there are also deluxe rooms.
THE FOOD: Start the day with a rich buffet breakfast. The menu at the restaurant, M'Ama offers local specialties and an extensive list of more than one hundred Italian wines. Dining under a starlight sky on the terrace is a romantic dream.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Be sure to ask for a room with a sea view. The breath-taking vista is magical.
LOCATION: The hotel is above the village of Praiano between Positano and Amalfi. There is a shuttle bus to the beach. The hotel has a parking lot for guests.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: The Amalfi Coast offers a spectacular choice of activities to the visitor. Stroll through the picturesque villages on the scenic road from Positano up to Vietri sul mare: Positano, Praiano, Furore, Amalfi, Vietri, Ravello. There are also numerous trails for hiking in the Lattari Mountains, notable is the Path of the Gods, that leads to Positano. Take the ferry to Sorrento and day trips to Capri and Naples. Hop on the Circumvesuviana train, as it's the simplest way to get to the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Slightly further away but still fascinating are the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Solfatara, the ruins of Paestum, and the city of Salerno. Near Battipaglia you can visit the cheese factories, where they produce buffalo mozzarella. And 1h30 from Sorrento is Feudi di San Gregorio, where you will find some of the best local wine producers of Falanghina, Lacrima Christi, and Greco di Tufo.
GOOD TO KNOW: There is a free hotel shuttle to the beach and Praiano is a peaceful village.
