THE HOTEL: This stunning boutique hotel in the heart of Milan offers the best of Milanese sophistication. Via Dante is a bustling, commercial street but the moment you walk into the hotel you are in a haven of relaxation. Sidestep the hassle of urban living and enter a world of well-being. Palazzo Segreti hotel is a stylish, designer retreat, intimate and warm. Many of the guests who stay here have come to visit the city's famous fashion houses and personal service is the hotel's philosophy. You will be welcomed with a complimentary drink and personally escorted to your room.
THE OWNER: The hotel belongs to Roberta and Francesco. This husband and wife team, a marketing executive, and a designer set out to restore the atmosphere of this historic 19th-century building, keeping many of the original features. They set out to create a home from home. The original cage elevator is part of the shabby chic style that makes this hotel stand out. Palazzo Segreti was the creation of architects Brizzi and Riefenstahl.
THE ROOMS: There are 18 rooms all stunningly different from each other but kitted out with the best of Italian furniture and fabrics. Choose a bath next to your bed, grey sophistication, or bright colors.
THE FOOD: Start the day with homemade cakes and in the evening enjoy a drink at the bar that has an extensive choice of wines.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: The pictures on show in the hotel are part of the Lia Rumma Gallery collection.
LOCATION: Palazzo Segreti is moments from the cathedral, the famous Duomo, and the La Scala opera house. Via Dante is pedestrianized and quiet, even though it is in the heart of the city. The hotel has excellent public transport connections and there is a bike hire rack just in front of the door.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Milan is Italy's designer capital. Stylish shopping, fabulous restaurants, and wonderful art galleries await you. The highlight of any trip is a walk on the roof of the Duomo, the third biggest church in Europe.
