THE RESIDENCE: Residence Sassela has 11 apartments on the lovely slopes a short walk from the center of the village of Ortisei. The apartments all have stunning views of the Dolomites. Ortisei is perfectly located in the heart of Val Gardena.

THE OWNER: The hotel is run by husband and wife team Barbara and Alex.

THE ROOMS: The apartments have been carefully restored. The rooms are cozy and feel like a typical mountain house. Some of the beams that have been used in the restoration project have been recovered from old farmhouses, which give the apartments an atmospheric touch. The furnishing is simple but stylish. Each apartment has a fully fitted kitchenette. Some have a balcony and other lead straight out onto the gardens. The apartments can sleep from 2-6 people. Each apartment has Wi-Fi.

THE FOOD: You can order milk, bread, and sweet breakfast cakes daily. There is also a takeaway delivery service. Alex offers romantic dinners on Piz Stella at the couple's exclusive mountain hideaway. After short drive guests hop onto a snowmobile for the final leg of the journey.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Residence Sassela has a beautiful indoor pool, jacuzzi, and sauna ideal for complete relaxation after a busy day in the mountains.

LOCATION: The Residence is 12.4 miles from the A22 autostrada and three-quarters of an hour from Bolzano. It is located just outside the beautiful atmospheric village of Ortisei, which has a lively center and some great boutiques and sports shops. At the traditional cake shops, you can savor the best apple strudel. The local delicatessens sell a wide variety of Tyrolean cheeses and lovely souvenirs abound among them wooden carvings and classic Tyrolean textiles.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: The Val Gardena is one of the most popular ski resorts in Italy with top-class skiing on the Seceda pistes, the Alpe di Siusi, and at Saslong the home of the annual World Cup. The resort is close to the renowned Dolomiti Superski. The circuit has 1200km of slopes and there is also the fabulous Stella Ronda to try. Besides the attractions of skiing and snowboarding in winter, this is also a top summer destination. There are excellent walking, climbing, and mountain biking.

GOOD TO KNOW: Residence Sassela is a member of the Ortisei Active program, which has a packed calendar of events all year round. Ortisei has an ice rink and hosts world championship hockey games.
