Vedetta Relais is a chic boutique hotel, just five minutes' drive to the beach and the picturesque Scarlino, in Tuscany's Maremma.  The inn, with just 15 suites and lodges, has fabulous views across the sea to the island of Elba and is perfect for a romantic break.

THE HOTEL: Vedetta Relais, in Tuscany's Maremma, is a delightful boutique hotel, perfect for a romantic break. It is off the beaten track at the end of a tiny road in the middle of the olive groves and it is perfect for couples seeking total seclusion. A stone's throw from the sea, the garden, and the pool have a fantastic view of Elba, the island where Napoleon was briefly interned. There is also a gourmet restaurant that offers a traditional menu and a wide selection of local wines. It is open every day for lunch and dinner.

THE OWNER: Anna is a lovely host. She once worked for an international company in Milan but a trip to renovate the family holiday home led to a new career in the hotel business. Her enthusiasm for life in the Maremma makes her a fountain of advice on what to see and do in the area.

THE ROOMS: There are 7 large individually designed suites in the main building and 8 lodges (55sqm each)in the wood. Each one takes the name of someone in Anna's family. The decoration mirrors their character and is a clever mix of the old and avant-garde. Each lodge is built in white wood with a white tent. 5 offers beautiful sea-views, 3 overlooks the picturesque Scarlino. Each lodge and suite has a king-sized bed with a living area and has a kettle and a mini-bar. The sumptuous bathrooms have handcrafted sinks made from Tuscan stone. The beautiful tiles in the showers offer an eye-catching finish. Families can choose the King Suite 'Inarrestabile esploratore' or the Lodge 'Pleione'.

THE FOOD: Breakfast on homemade cakes and savor the sweet pastries, cold cuts, and cheese. You can sleep as late as you like - as here breakfast is an all-day affair. If you feel peckish there is complimentary tea, coffee, and fresh fruit. Anna is happy to cook dinner for her guests.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Once a week from June to September, Vedetta Jazz & Emotions suggests a dinner under the stars with live music and a tasting menu. Each dish is accompanied by its best local wine, directly introduced by the producers.

LOCATION: You are just outside the village of Scarlino, 40 minutes' drive from Piombino.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: You need your own transport to discover the delights of this part of Tuscany. Go for a hike or mountain bike in Maremma Natural Park. Play golf, visit a winery or stroll around the pretty villages of Scarlino, Talamone and Castiglione della Pescaia. Siena, Pisa, and Lucca are under two hours by car.

GOOD TO KNOW: During the summer the Vedetta can reserve your umbrella and sunbeds on the beach. The Relais is suitable only for older children (above 12 yo) and is pet-friendly.
