THE HOTEL: The chic resort of Taormina is perched on a steep hill and from here the Villa Angela offers breath-taking views of the Ionian Sea along the Sicilian coast and of the volcano Mount Etna. The Hotel Villa Angela is a boutique hotel in the chic Sicilian resort of Taormina. The hotel opened in 2004 and seeks to convey the true essence of Sicilian life. Built and furnished with local materials like the local Taormina stone. It uses traditional wrought-iron craftsmanship and chestnut wood. It has spacious terraces and large windows with panoramic views. There is a swimming pool, solarium, and private parking. Villa Angela is just outside the pedestrianized old town and so it is easily accessible by car.

THE OWNER: Ten years ago singer-songwriter Jim Kerr, of Scotland's stars Simple Minds, fell in love with Taormina on a tour. He decided to open his dream hotel, where family, friends, and fans could discover the magic of Sicily. The hotel is run on a daily basis by Charlie, the friendly local manager, who has a very professional staff.

THE ROOMS: The hotel's 27 rooms are a mixture of sizes: Deluxe and Superior Deluxe (20sqm), Petite Deluxe (18sqm), Junior Suite (24sqm) and Etna suites (40 sqm). Each room has a private terrace with breath-taking views, air conditioning, satellite TV, a safe, a minibar, and free Wi-fi. The deluxe superior, junior suites, and suites have whirlpool baths. The Etna Suite has two rooms and is ideal for families. All the rooms are decorated in the Sicilian style with local Caltagirone ceramics, lovely chestnut furniture, and wrought-iron beds.

THE FOOD: The Hotel has a restaurant open to the public, which can seat up to 50 people in the dining room or on the romantic terrace. The menu consists of the Mediterranean and Sicilian dishes and there is an excellent wine list.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE: When Jim Kerr is not in residence be sure to book into his own private Leonardo Da Vinci Suite. It is a large room of 46sqm with a white leather shell-shaped bed, a bathroom with Jacuzzi, and two private terraces with unrivaled views of Mount Etna and the sea. It is ideal for honeymoon couples!

LOCATION: Taormina is only 45 minutes from Catania airport. The hotel is just below the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca and above the historic heart of Taormina, which is just 800m or 5 minutes away in the hotel shuttle bus.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Taormina is a picturesque village perched high on the hillside. It has been a celebrity Mecca since 1787 when the German writer Goethe paid a visit. In the early 1920s, D.H. Lawrence lived close by. Taormina has a spectacular Ancient Greek theatre and the old town is full of shops, bars, and restaurants and it has a beautiful public garden. If you fancy a dip in the sea or want to take a boat ride, there is a cable car down to the coast. It is 10 minutes' walk down the stairs to the pebble beach of Isola Bella. Taormina is the perfect base from which to make a trip to Mount Etna. Go to Campo Provenzano and take the STAR 4x4 bus to the active crater. On a clear day, you can see the coast and volcanic activity are extraordinary. At night from the hotel, you can watch the fireworks as the volcano gets into action. Be sure to combine the visit with a trip to the Etna Alcantara Gorges, where there is fabulous walking, hiking or rafting body. It is 1h20m to beautiful Syracuse. In the wonderful old town of Ortigia be sure to stop for lunch in the market at Fratelli Burgio, a grocery store with outdoor seating that prepares an excellent spread of typical Sicilian products!
