For a taste of high culture visit the 16th century Villa Farnesina, commissioned by banker Agostino Chigi as a love nest. He whiled away his time with his mistresses and it is decorated with exquisite romantic frescoes.

Walk hand in hand Walk along the Tiber in the moonlight. Stop at the Ponte Milvio made famous by Federico Moccia's novel, I Want You. Sadly you can't tie a padlock to the bridge anymore but you seal your love with a kiss here. Enjoy the city's most breathtaking views from Gianicolo, Monte Mario or the Orange Garden on the Aventine hill.

The Romantic Meal  Take an evening cruise along the Tiber and dine by candlelight as you float past the city's top sights. For a lively night out, head for Trastevere, Rome's trendy district.

Get in the mood Escape the hustle of the city and stroll or bike along the Via Appia Antica. This is one of the oldest roads that lead from Rome and was finished in 312BC. It starts at the Porta San Sebastiano and runs past fields and ancient monuments. It has long been a haunt for lovers and until it was declared a national park it was at night a chaos of passionate couples in cars. Today is it a peaceful place and beautifully romantic, especially in the late afternoon sun.
