Romantic Escape in Venice

Tourism for Two. Venice is totally unique and the perfect place for a romantic holiday. It's compact, so it's easy to explore at your own pace leaving plenty of time to linger over lunch and gaze into each other's eyes. Romance in Venice is not about jostling crowds of tourists but seeking out the city's quiet corners. Pick one or two of the big must-see sights and take the trip at a leisurely pace. You can't visit Venice and not see St Mark's and the Doges Palace but there's always a long queue to climb the bell tower of St Mark's, so dodge the crowds and take in the vista from San Giorgio Maggiore's bell tower across the lagoon. The view is at its most romantic in the late afternoon. Sunset in Venice is often a wonder of pink and red-streaked skies.
The charm of the city is its labyrinth of medieval alleyways and canals. The romance is to be found simply forgetting the map and getting lost. The Ghetto, one of Venice's most evocative areas, is rich in history and surprisingly quiet compared to other parts of the city. If you want to push the boat out splash out on a gondola ride and spend an evening in the La Fenice opera house.
Walk hand in hand Get up early and stay up late. Strolling around Venice in the early morning or late at night is beautiful. It's the moment to kiss in St Mark's Square and hold hands on the Rialto without the crowds of day-trippers. Explore the areas that are not on the tourist beat like Dorsoduro and Cannaregio. Venice is simply there to be admired and to be the backdrop to your romance. The best places to escape the crowds and have a peaceful walk is on the island of Guidecca or on the Zattere, the long promenade runs along Venice's southern shore, where there are wonderful views across the lagoon to St Mark's Square.
The Romantic Meal To get a taste of real Venice, and feel like a true Venetian couple, pop into a 'bacaro', one of the small bars where locals go for a glass of wine and a quick snack and a chat. Eat traditional authentic Venetian fish dishes at Da Fiore, a lovely trattoria in San Polo.
Get in the mood
Jump on a Vaporetto and head out to the islands of Burano, Murano, and Torcello. Feel the breeze and admire the views. Buy beautiful jewelry on Murano to remember your time together.
