THE HOTEL: La Villa is a stylish boutique hotel in a 17th-century farmhouse surrounded by vineyards. The hotel is near the Monferrato wine region, in southern Piedmont. There are a good size outdoor pool and a roof terrace with wonderful views. There is a gym, table tennis, and bicycles for guests to use.
THE OWNER: Irish Chris and English Nicola came to Piedmont in search of peace and tranquillity. "We were exhausted by the hectic pace of our lives in London," Chris explains. "We wanted to slow down and to see more of our kids." The farmhouse was falling down when they moved to Italy with their daughters aged eight and eleven. The girls are now grown up and the farm is perfectly renovated. "We are so happy we made the move," says Chris, his perfect Italian has a hint of an English accent."We close from November to Easter," says Nicola. 'But it's not for rest! We whitewash the walls and add something new to the hotel. We just finished a new teak decking by the pool. It has a fabulous view."
THE ROOMS: There are 6 large airy suites, 1 single room and 7 doubles, 1 classic and 6 superiors. The suites and rooms have beamed ceilings and are furnished with a combination of antique and local pieces. The style is countryside-chic. The mattresses are handmade and some rooms have four-poster beds. The private balconies or terraces have views across the undulating countryside towards the Alps.
THE FOOD: Their top-notch restaurant, La Vie is open to the public by reservation only. English chef Charlie Mozley worked for Jamie Oliver before he traveled all over Italy. His dishes are quintessentially Italian and made with only ingredients that are in season. Wednesday evening is the Italian tapas night. You eat all your meals in the lovely garden in summer. Cooking lessons are available and the restaurant caters for special diets. Southern Piedmont is a gourmet paradise. Try Italy's tastiest truffles and scrumptious chestnuts and hazelnuts. The country's best wines are produced here among them Barolo, Barbaresco, Grignolino, Barbera, and Dolcetto d'Acqui.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: A trip to Piedmont is a gourmet experience and it is the home of the Slow Food Movement.
LOCATION: The hotel is in southern Piedmont in the north-western corner of Italy. In spring, Piedmont's green lush fields are surrounded by an amphitheater of snow-capped mountains and in autumn the vineyards turn a deep russet red.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: La Villa is the perfect base from which to explore the quaint medieval villages that pepper the countryside. Chris and Nicola know the area like the back of their hands. Chris can help you discover the area's top food and wine producers and book you into gourmet restaurants. Go truffle hunting, cycling, and hiking routes. You can even play a round of golf. There are lots of festivals and fairs in spring, summer, and autumn.
GOOD TO KNOW: If you have a celebration to plan, Nicola and Chris can help you organize the birthday party, wedding, or anniversary event you have dreamed of.
