Why choose explore un-tourist Rome
The Castelli Romani tour is one of the best tours to do from Rome. This undiscovered region is home to 15 picturesque towns, sprawling vineyards, and amazing lakes. The tour will bring you along Castelgandolfo, Nemi, Marino, and Frascati. You will stop in the historic food 'temples' to taste their specialties: bread, pizza, salami, and more. You will enjoy a glass of local wine in the most traditional 'fraschette' which are the places where you buy the wine and can bring your own food like the old Romans used to do! You will enjoy the spectacular views over the volcanic Lake Albano and Lake Nemi and learn the history of these woods at the Roman times. It's unbelievable that Rome is only 25 minutes away.
Location The regional park of Castelli Romani is an undiscovered area, 12 miles South-East of Rome, and has been an exclusive getaway for aristocrats since the Roman times, first for the emperors and then for the Pope. The Vatican Observatory is located in Castel Gandolfo, also home to the papal palace and incredible villas. The area is a weekend gathering for local families and friends, popular for drinking wine and eating well. 'Frascati DOC' is at the heart of Lazio's wine production while Ariccia village is popular for the 'porchetta' (whole roasted pig) and Genzano for its IGP Pane Casareccio (bread loaf).
Food: You will stop in the historic bakery in Nemi to savor the traditional bread and the ciambelle al vino (wine biscuits). You will taste also some bruschette with a mushroom/truffle pate', some local salami, cheese with a glass of the local Frascati wine. You will savor the local focaccia with Pachino tomatoes in Frascati and the traditional puppona biscuit in Marino. Shop for the traditional wild strawberries from Spring till Autumn.
Your Guide: Pierpaolo is a friendly local who decided to show his secret places to the most curious travelers! So he decided to move to a part-time job in order to have some free time to bring travelers around! He is available every morning and sometimes also in the afternoon. He can speak English, French, and Spanish and loves playing guitar and singing traditional roman songs.
Meeting Point: Take the new train from Termini Railways station and enjoy the panoramic ride through the regional park of the roman aqueducts along the old Appian Way. Far from the busy city center, you will reach Frascati after only 25 minutes. Meet Pierpaolo outside Frascati's small railway station.
The icing on the cake: If you want, ask Pierpaolo to stop at the historic San Nilo Abbey, a hidden gem in Grottaferrata which has beautiful architecture. The Orthodox church offers great views over Rome to the sea!
Good to know: The tour can be combined with a cooking class and/or a wine tasting in a local farm (+ €80pp for the wine-food tasting - write barbara@boutiquehotelitaly.com to book)
