The area North-East Rome Driving for less than half an hour from Rome, you can reach the hilltop villages of Marino, Frascati and enjoy dramatic views over the Lake of Nemi and Castelgandolfo. The area is popular among the locals for the traditional delicious food and wine. Beautiful are the two villas in Tivoli, in the Unesco WHS List. Hilltop Civita di Bagnoregio is truly unique. Rieti and Viterbo have a picturesque center and their surrounding countryside is dotted with ancient castles of the aristocratic families, powerful during the Popes' reigns.
The area South-Rome is ideal to relax after the visit of the eternal city and to escape from the Roman summer heat. Drive no more than 1 hour to reach the spectacular sandy beach in Sabaudia. It’s a magical place with golden dunes gently reclining towards the sea and great for swimming. Walk along the 20km blue-flag beach and hike in the 'Parco Nazionale del Circeo' which boasts a number of bird-watching points. Reach the top of Mount Circeo to enjoy the most dramatic sea-view over the islands, just in front of the coast! Hire a canoe and enjoy the salt-water Lake Paola which runs parallel to the coast.
Sabaudia is a nice village, very popular and lively in summer among VIPs from Rome. It boasts some examples of Fascist architecture built at the time when Mussolini developed the project to drain Pontine marshes but there are traces of a pre-existing ancient Roman settlement. The coast is dotted with a number of watchtowers, including the exceptionally well-conserved Torre Paola, erected in the 16th century. Not to be missed the ruins of the ancient Villa di Domiziano. The whole area is dotted with a number of picturesque villages to visit: Circeo, Terracina, Sperlonga, Gaeta, Sermoneta, Ninfa and more. There are opportunities for boat tours to the Pontinian Islands (Ponza, Palmarola, and Ventotene) with their lively ports surrounded by colorful houses, amazing sea-caves, and deserted beaches.
The climate along the coast is temperate and this means that there is always a breeze even in the summer and temperatures are on average around 30C also in July and August. To explore the area it is worth having a car.
