THE HOTEL: Abbadia San Giorgio is the perfect boutique hotel if you want a romantic break or tranquil getaway on the Italian Riviera. The luxury hotel is in a 15th-century former Franciscan monastery. The cloisters have a delightful arcaded garden which is the heart of this hotel. The monks also founded the adjacent Church of San Giorgio di Moneglia in 1396. A center of learning, in the 16th century the abbey had a library of 700 books and its own hospital. The abbey was closed down by Napoleon who conquered Liguria and it fell into disrepair after the Risorgimento.
THE OWNER: Local Sella and Botto families set about restoring the abbey in 2006. The government assisted with the restoration of the frescoes and the facade. A few years ago the families which have been in the hotel business for generations, decided to pass this magical place to their daughters Greta and Francesca, friends since their childhood. They embraced the new adventure with enthusiasm and have been running the Abbadia San Giorgio with professionalism and passion since then. "I love to travel but I'm always so very lucky to come back home. In a way it's as if I'm on holiday all year round!" says Francesca. "Working in hospitality is a fantastic chance to discover different cultures, ideas, and languages and it is a great way to learn and develop", says Greta.
THE ROOMS: There are 8 rooms and suites with wrought iron beds and terracotta floors. One room has a four-poster bed. For a special treat try the sumptuous Honeymoon suite. Contemporary and spacious, the rooms are decorated with a clever combination of antiques and modern pieces and finished with gorgeous rich materials.
THE FOOD: Breakfast on milk and cheese from the unique Vai di Vara, which is a totally organic valley and savors marmalade made from lemons grown in Monterosso. There are regular tasting sessions of specialties from the Tiguillo area in the old refectory. This part of Liguria is famous for its lemons, honey, and olive oil.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Romance is in the air in this luxury hotel and you can even get married here.
LOCATION: Moneglia is a family seaside resort on the eastern side of Liguria. In Latin name, Monilia means 'jewel'. It was the birthplace of the well-known painter Luca Cambiaso (1527 – 1585). The hill-side village is ideal to discover the region by car or by train and the hotel is close to the railway station.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO: There is a sandy beach moment from the hotel. The Cinque Terre are only a short train ride away. Hike along the breath-taking paths which link the picturesque hill-top villages or visit them popping in and out from the local train. Stroll around Sestri Levante (20 minutes away), a lively resort between the 'Baia del Silenzio' and the 'Baia delle Favole', a tribute to Hans Christian Anderson who lived here. Reach the V.I.P. colorful harbor of Portofino and take a boat to see San Fruttuoso Abbey and the huge bronze statue 'Cristo degli Abissi' under the sea. Visit Camogli, which has a panoramic path to 'Punta Chiappa' and if you are an expert hiker, reach San Fruttuoso on foot. Do not miss to stop in Recco to taste the popular focaccia al formaggio (with cheese).
GOOD TO KNOW: The ethos of the Abbadia is 'Slow Living' and complete relaxation. That is why children are not permitted.
