THE HOTEL: This boutique hotel is in a historic tower house, which was built in the early 13th century. The hotel is atmospheric and has a fascinating history.
A hundred years ago the hotel was a well-known guesthouse, the Piccioli, which was a popular spot for tourists on the Grand Tour. It hosted many of the aristocrats and intellectuals, who flocked to the city. After the terrible destruction caused by the Second World War the hotel closed. It has now been restored and reopened fifteen years ago. Many of the original features like the classic Guelf carvings on the outside of the building have been carefully brought back to life.

The hotel lounge is bang up to date and has "sound immersion" technology. You can travel away from Florence into the rainforest, sit by a crackling virtual fire, and go back in time to hear the sounds of Renaissance Florence's portside.

The hotel has a fabulous terrace, which has a 360-degree panoramic view across the city. Watch the sunset over the River Arno from one of its two romantic terraces. Then gaze at the stars against the backdrop of the Duomo and Giotto's bell tower

THE ROOMS: There are 19 air-conditioned rooms on four floors. They measure from 15-50sqm in size and some are large enough for families. They have wood floors or are carpeted. Each is decorated in the traditional Florentine style and has antique furniture; some have wrought iron four-posters. The bright colored fabrics echo the work of the Florentine painter, Giotto.

THE FOOD: You eat a breakfast buffet on the terrace, which features Tuscan specialties. There is an honesty bar in the evenings.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE: On a romantic escape be sure to book the Hamman suite, which has a private spa with color therapy, double Jacuzzi and a Turkish bath.

LOCATION: The hotel is on Via Tornabuoni, in the old town, overlooking the river. It is a 5-minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria. The neighborhood is full of elegant boutiques, bars, and restaurants. The area is a restricted traffic zone but the hotel offers valet parking at an extra fee cost. You must reserve this when booking.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: Florence is an amazing city with almost 80 museums where to admire the best of the Italian Renaissance: Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Botticelli. Visit the Duomo; climb up the Giotto's bell tower, admire the baptistery, and then visit the Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, and Michelangelo's David in the Accademia Gallery. Walk around the Loggia dei Lanzi in Piazza della Signoria and then take a romantic stroll crossing Ponte Vecchio until Piazzale Michelangelo to enjoy the view across the city.
